June's 11th Blog 28/8/09
A proxy server is a computer that functions as an intermediary between a web browser such as internet explorer and internet proxy servers help improve web performance by storing a copy of frequently used webpapges when a brower requests a wepage stored in a proxy server's collection it is provided by the proxy server. Which is faster than going to the web proxy servers also help improve security by filting out some web content and malicious software.
Proxy serves are used mostly by networks in organizations and companies typically people connecting to the internet from home will not use a proxy server.
Proxy server can be used to hide the identity of someone connected to a server.
The server would see the URL of the proxy server rather than the computer connected to the proxy server.

When you are using the internet you have to remember that there are alot of legal considerations that you have to be aware of and one of the biggest things is Copyright.
Copyright:Rules which we have in place within the libraries
Works in electronic form, you may download or print for the purposes of
- Private study or research for a non- commercial purpose without asking permission from the copyright holder
- when copying from web pages, respect web copyright notices and any copyright statements attached to works.
- unless explicit permission to copy more is given on the website, only single copies may be downloaded and printed
- unless explicit permission is given on the website, copying for research for a commercial purpose is prohibited.
- using material from a subscription data should be governed by contractual conditions
- unless it is impracticable all copies must be acknowledged
- Breaching copyright is a legal offence.
We also have a book on the photocopier that customers are shown so if they are wanting to copy stuff like Birth Certificates, Death Certificates, maps, music and knitting patterns then they are aware of the rules of copyright and that they can only have one copy and state that it is for private and personal use.
Duration of Copyright
- Literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work copyright normally lasts for seventy years.
- Sound recordings and broadcasts, copyright lasts for fifty years
- Films fifty years principal director, author or composer dies.
- When it comes to copying a book one chapter or 5% of extracts
- Journal or periodical one article from any one issue
I think people have to realise that copyright on the internet has the same rules as copyright off it and I think that's how people get themselves in such a mess.
Downloads
Music sites and Videos
It is illegal to download pirated copies of commerical software it is perfectly legal to download various other types of software, for example.
Itunes, Napster, these are sites that you can download music from paying for each track or you can pay for the whole album. There are other sites which have free downloads also.
Data Protection Act 1998
We know in the libraries that Data Protection Act is so important, we store information about people on our computers and that they have a right to know what information is held about them.
- Data must be accurate and up to date
- Data must be stored securely
We have to follow the Data protection Act very strictly in the library as we are holding on to peoples names and address etc. We are not allowed to give out any information to any person that asks for a name or address over the counter.
Even if someone has lost their purse, which happened once in one of the libraries that I worked. I had to make it very clear to the person that handed it over that I wasn't allowed to hand over the persons details as I would be breaking the Data protection Act with my work.
Online Behaviour/Netiquette
Remember that the information that you type on to the internet, either through emails, chat rooms, My space, face books and Bebo stays on the internet stays on the internet for years. And it can be used against you for years to come.
Adhere to the same standards of behaviour online that you follow in real life

When someone comes into the library and wishes to use one of the computers that we have in the learning centre they need to have the following information at hand.
Library Card Number and Pin number (Personal identity number)
They then sit down in front of the computer and are aske to log in but before they are take to the East Renfrewshires libraries Acceptable use policy which lists the following information.
- Acceptable use policy for PCs in the libraries
- Permissible use
- System Operating conditions
- Customer Care
- Administration and Conduct
- Charging
- Data Protection Act 1998
Once they have agreed to these conditions they press the agree button and are give a page where they are ask to put in their login which is their library number with out the P at the front and their password which is their pin number.

What I liked very much about this package was that it gave you Internet Use time control which most of the packages do, but this one gave you a hyperlink which allowed you to go in and it takes you through step by step and also shows you the many awards that it has received like labybird, and disney, which are something that a parent who may not be very up to spead on computers can notice straight away and release that this is a good package. Also it comes in at £39.99 which is a good price.
Net Nanny Home Suite
First of all it is more expensive and they have more packages than you really need.
This might put off parents who have less experience with computers.

Having just read about this is really is very scary to know that any inforamtion that you might type in to your computer on My space, Bebo, or anything hackers can get that information and read through it to try and find your passwords to get in to other information that you might have on line. I never thought that they could do these things it really makes you sit up and think about your passwords and to have different ones for everything that you sign into and also have throw away email adresses also. And finding out that banks are starting to move away from these kinds of security questions is really worrying.
PASSWORDS AND CRACKING PASSWORDS
When I log into my work computer we have a password that has upper and lower case letters and numbers and every 6 or 7 months we are sent another instruction telling us that it has changes this is to make sure that we don't become to used to it and also to protect the system that we are on.
There are hackers out there that spend a great deal of time trying to get into your personal details especially bank accounts and they have software that can help them do this.
There is a company called Elcomsoft that has a password cracking software for sell and it can carry out dictionary and brute-force attacks on your computer.
Dictionary attacks, means that the computer goes through the whole dictionary trying to pick out the words that can crack your password. And Brute-force is that it works out every single charactor in your password until it get's it. Very much like the film wargames when you watch that it get's every number if I remember rightly.
Just always remember to mix letters up and use upper and lower case and change your password regularly.
EMAIL ENCRYPTION
This is a great idea, it very James Bond, you have to have to keys to work this, one has to be a private key that is only know to yourselve the other is a public key that you can give out to your friends, family and people that you want to have it. They can send you a message and they can encrypt it using your public kay and you can decrypt it using your private key. And what that means is that anyone who trys to read you information will not be able to as they will not have your private key details.
SECURITY SUITES
A security suit inables you to put protect your computer from a number of threats rather than installing things one by one.
There are alot of these kinds of products on the market by I have chosen two that I am going to tell you a wee bit about.
One is called Panda and the other is Steganos 7.0.4
- Panda
- detection of more than a million viruses and other threats, offering protection far higher than traditional antiviruses
- anti spyware, anit phishing , firewall, identity protection backups anti spam and parental control.
- Steganos 7..04
- easy to use encrypton software
- encryt and stores upto 256GB of data in a safe and real time securing large data and picture files
- internet trace destructor
- secure data transport free
- shedder and deep cleaning eliminate unwanted files
PROXY SERVERS
June's 6th Blog 22nd June 2009
Just as it states in it's name it tries to hold the user to ransom, saying that if you don't send money through to them then the information that you have on your computer will be wiped off and that you will lose everything. They include backdoors and keyloggers and read only files.
Key loggers
Key loggers are designed to capture text from computers such as passwords and credit card details that the user is unaware that they are giving away.
Adware
Pop up bloggers can appear on your computer and these can be very off putting as they can be adverts of lots of things that they are wishing for you to buy. you can block these from coming on to your computer.
Anti - Virus Software
Explaining two different times
Norton Anitvirus and McAfee
Norton
- blocks spyware
- removes worms automatically
- prevents virus - infected emails from spreading
- removes spyware and viruses
McAfee
- stops hackers so that you can use the internet with safely
- stops viruses and blocks, cleans and removes viruses
- blocks spyware and removes existing spyware
Most antivirus software have the basic protections as you can see from above but they can also differ as some will have more protection or different proctection to offer.
as for the two that I have chosen to talk about they differ in a big way Norton includes Internet worm proctection, anti spyware and rootkit detection, where McAfee I feel has so much more to offer such as firewall, hackers and spyware protection and warnes you about sites that send spam and installs adware. Just a wee insight to different types of antivirus software. While I was reading through all this information I also looked up the Which magazine and found out the best providers that were out there for Broadband and also the problems that people were having with their providers and anti virus packages that they have, and what the different prices for these packages and a wee bit of inside knowledge for yourselve before you go and buy it for your computer. www.which.co.uk or get it insulted.

Spam: there are different types of spam, spam advertising which has mostly gambling sites , phamacies, share deals and porn.
The lottery Scam, saying that you have won the lottery and that the only way that you can claim your prize is to send money to release your winnings.
Spamfilters: you can buy these software packages which will enable you to buy to allow you to detect spam before it reaches your mail box.
Spamfighter: if you have spamfighter on your computer as soon as you receive a spam mail that is not detected the user can report the mail with one click and it removed.
Adware
Adware is the name given to any software that displays advertisements. Adware is generally regarded as a type of spyware because it selects the adverts to be displayed on the basis of the users browsing habits.
Rootkits
A rootkit normally attacks componenets on your operating system . It allows the intruder to hide his or hers activity on the system and is able to access the system again in the future, so often known as backdoors.
Rogue diallers
Rogue diallers are programs which take over modems causing it to dial by itself to premium numbers and run up a huge phone bill for you without you even knowing that it is happening until your next phone bill hit's your doormat. this can happen while you are surfing the net or if you have just stepped away ffrom the computer and gone for a short break.
Hackers
Hackers are people who gain access to computer systems that they shouldn't be in and steal information or try to unset the computer systems of big companies, or goverment information.
Wargames was a film that I saw when I was in mt teens, it was about a young guy who breaks into a US Military computer and starts a countdown to World War 2. There are many famouse hackers and once they have served their time in jail, companies employ them and they are called white hat hackers. Some have even started their own companies.
Phishing
Phishing is an email technique which is used to get people to give away information to steal their financial information such as bank account numbers and pins. They send you a letter that looks very like the bank has sent it and if you weren't clued up on this stuff you may fall into the trap.
Pharming
Pharming is the name given to attemps to redirect a website's traffic to another bogus website. Pharming websites can look and feel the same as the real website. Unlike phishing sites they are usually display the URL of the desired site in the http bar. The real sites use padlocks and the hppts ( Secure Hypertext Transport protocal)
Firewalls
Firewalls are normally a computer program which restricts access to a computer or network. Firewalls block certain sites coming through on your computer it checks the site so that there is nothing sexual, porn etc and also protects you from hackers taking advantage.
ID Theft
Identity Theft /fraud is when someone hacks into your computer and steals your Identity such as passports and driving licences in your name. Worse still they can try and take out credit cards and loans and mortgages in your name. This is why people are advised to shred important information rather than just putting it in your bin as people have beening going through peoples bins. In America this is called Dumpster diving.
Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is happening all over the world to school children, it is a terrible thing and sadly this has happened in my on work place and I have seen it first hand and the upset that it can cause to the child and the family. They can be bullied through email blogs and mobile phone texting, Cyberbulling is sadly a difficult thing to detect, but I was lucky that theychild involved in my cause felt able to tell me and we contacted her mother and the police were involved and the matter was sorted out straight away.
Grooming
Grooming is given to the actions taken by an adult to form a trusting relationship with young people with the attention of encouraging them to take part in some kind of sexual activity. People who carry out grooming are known as groomers.

June's 4th update 29/01/09
SPYWARE
Spyware can be installed without even the user knowing anything about it. It can collect information from your computer such as banking details and send it on to other places with you not even being aware that it has done this. Spyware can hijack a computer and add additional software, and can take you off to other pages that you never even requested. Many computers are infected with spyware and users are unaware of it. You can be tricked into going to certain websites and while you are there the spyware is downloading and installing software on to your computer. The name for this is called Drive by download very cunning in deed.
There are ways that you can protect your computer from these things happening to it such as ensuring that your software is up to date and making security settings high enough to detect unauthoried downloads, Spyware can cause so many things to go wrong with your computer increase disk activity, network traffic and make your computer crash. But the worst thing that it can do is to make you wipe the whole of the hard disk and rid the machine of the spyware all together.
Here are a few things that I have read about which should help you to detect if you have spyware is on your computer and how to try to prevent it from happening.
Detection
New toolbars appearing, your computer going very slow when trying to save files, and the computer taking you off to other website that you haven't requested it to do so.
Prevention
Install a firewall, we have these on our computers at work in the learning centre which helps stop users from accessing your computer.,watch out for offers for you to sign up for anit spyware software, don't click on any pop up windows.
Spyware and the law
Computer misuse act 1990, and Data protection Act 1998 authors of spyware can break the law as the information that they use and get is breaking the data protection act and this is illegal.
End User Licence agreement
You need to watch out for this as spyware can get around this data protection by asking the user to accept the EULA and by accepting this you are opening yourselve right up, so watch out for the small print.
Anti Spyware
There are many companys out there that offer anit spyware software and this is who some of them are and how it works.
McAfee and Symantec are two anti spyware firms
Users can make there computers schedule daily and monthly scan to look and remove any spyware on there computer, and like the anit virus software it can prevent spyware from entering your system and being installed. There are also Fake anti spyware programs out there as well surprize surprize, so you have to watch out for this as well, makes you what to go back to paper and pen when you realise the amount of threats you can get on your computer it is scary stuff. What you have to watch out for is adverts coming up on your computer saying that it has been infexted and that you can fix it by downloading certain anit spyware software, and by doing that you maybe fecting your computer more So be on your guard.
I am going to finish here today and log back on tomorrow and finish off this part about spyware
I am finding it very interesting and also that the book let's you know when to stop and write up you blog/ log book. Bye for now.

June's 3rd Update 19/1/09
First of all I started with the Viruses
When buying a computer and setting it up at home people are unaware that as soon as you connect it to the Internet you are already vulnerable to attack of malicious software attaching it's self to your computer, they can contain bugs that can cause your computer to crash, go very slow.
Computer viruses have two features they can execute themselves which means they attach themselves to executable files such as an application or utility program and they must replicate or copy which is often done by replacing programs with copies infected with viruses.
Some viruses can go straight for the servers and this can become a complete nightmare as it can slow down the whole system and you are unable to use it as it crashes or goes so slow which is impossible to use. The name used for this attack is call DoS which is Denial of service. Another virus which I found to be very interesting was the multipartite virus, this one has a double sting in the tail, it infects both the boot sector and the files and has the nerve to leave an image to say that it called. There are other examples for this virus but I liked this one Tequila as it left a calling card, bad enough that you have the virus.
These viruses are very cunning, the Stealth viruses tries to hide it's self from anti virus software and the Memory-resident lurks in the memory waiting to infect other programs, they are like the shark in Jaws waiting to grab it's victim from the sea.
Trojans and Worms
Trojans are started by a user and they do not replicate, They can attach themselves to emails and that is why it is very important that you should be very careful when opening email attachments or down loading stuff from the internet. If this occurs the virus can cause loss or theft of data that is stored on you computer.
Worms can replicate themselves and don't need a user, worms can hide themselves in files and can travel from computer to computer . They can hide in files such as Mircosoft word and Excel, and by inserting a floppy disk, memory pen or just by running a program. They can take control over your computer. mass mailing sends emails to your whole address book.
Image Viruses
Image viruses this was one that I again found very scary as only just learning about this is was hard to understand that you can get a virus attached to an image which has been send to your computer and it can be hidding in the image. We at home take a great deal of digital photos and send them by email to the USA and you just don't realise that they can attach themselves to a photo or a clip that you have taken fromn the internet.
Screensavers
Again was not aware that you could get a virus on a screen saver, but after reading about it coming in an image and also with the Trojan attaching it to an email it is all becoming clear to me and I am learning so much from this course already which is great.
Anti Virus Software
I had heard of anti virus software before as we have it on the computer at home, which was the Norton software and McAfee. It was good to sit down and read through what they did in depth as you just see it as your computer starts up, but not really aware of the back ground of what it actually does such as: worm protection, removes spyware, blocks spyware and worms automatically, prevents virus infectied emails from spreading. These are just a few of the things that an anit virus package can do for your computer there are many packages that you can choose from. BT, Virgin, etc
I will finish off here tonight and I will log back on tomorrow with my next blog which will be all about Spyware. I hope that I am filling this in the correct way and that you are able to understand what I am trying to get across. bye for now
